Hiccup cried out in shocked agony before falling to the floor. He clutched his bleeding left leg to his chest and grimaced as he saw the dagger still lodged inside his calf. Astrid called out to him and asked if he was alright, but Hiccup couldn’t hear what she said over the ringing in his ears. The pain sent his body into shock, so the wound probably felt better than it should’ve.
"Big mistake, witch!" Astrid seethed as she chopped the succubus’ head clean off her shoulders. Astrid was no stranger to gore; she was Berk’s most promising warrior for a reason. She didn’t even bat an eyelash at the severed head rolling across the floor and instead focused her attentions on Hiccup.
"Hiccup! Oh gods, she got you good, huh? Think you can walk?" She asked as she tried to keep Hiccup’s eyes on hers. "Come on, Hiccup, stay awake! You’re losing a lot of blood so you need to stay awake for me, okay?"
Hiccup cracked his eyes open and opened his mouth to reply to Astrid’s prodding. Instead he screamed as his leg flared up with painful heat. If he didn’t know better, Hiccup would say the dagger was poisoned! That wasn’t likely, though. The succubus said she wanted them alive, but for what? Oh, right, to become a cumcow for their corrupted factory. It was getting hard for Hiccup to think, which wasn’t a good sign.
Astrid tore off Hiccup’s pants from right above the knee, using the shredded remains to tie a tight knot right above the wound to stop the blood flow. She saw that the knife was in pretty deep and that Hiccup was in a considerable amount of pain. She needed to remove the knife and clean and seal the wound before he bled to death.
That was when Astrid remembered the potions Jack made for them. Some were healing potions! Maybe one of them could help Hiccup. She rummaged through their sack and pulled out one of the glass vials with a green tinted liquid in it. She uncorked it and dribbled some onto Hiccup’s leg, the stinging from the healing liquid causing him to scream in pain.
"I’m sorry, Hiccup," Astrid said to her friend after she set down the bottle, then placed one hand on Hiccup’s leg while the other grabbed the hilt of the dagger. "This is going to hurt, but it will be much better soon…"
She then quickly with all her strength pulled the dagger out of Hiccup’s leg then quickly poured the rest of the healing potion onto the wound, praying that the wound would close up fast enough to stop the blood flow.
Hiccup’s breathing was harsh and came out in pained moans. The potion Jack made for them was a blessed relief for him. Still, even as the wound seemed to close and the pain ebbed away, Hiccup felt something was wrong. It became obvious what was nagging at him when Hiccup went to move his leg. With dawning horror robbing his face of all color, he turned to face Astrid.
"I can’t move my leg." He whispered in terror, "I can’t feel it, either! Astrid what’s wrong with my leg…?" Hiccup’s breathing picked up and his head spun with worst-case scenarios. He felt something pressing against his head and Hiccup whimpered in fear before his sight went blessedly dark.
Astrid’s face also went white when Hiccup told her that. She hadn’t seen exactly where the demon had struck, but now that she looked again, Astrid could see a puffy pink scar right along the back of Hiccup’s knee! Closer inspection revealed that while the skin and top layer of muscle was healed, The ligaments attaching Hiccup’s leg to his knee were cut away.
To keep Hiccup from hyperventalating, Astrid hummed soothingly and guided his head between his knees. Hopefully if there wasn’t light and color assaulting his senses, Hiccup could find a moment to breathe.
"This isn’t good…" Astrid muttered to herself.
The leg was completely useless now. Hiccup would be lucky if infection didn’t fester in his severed ligament and kill him from the inside. Astrid didn’t think she would have to do this here. Mareth was fraught with dangers, but none that would make Astrid worry about amputating her chiefson’s leg!
Coming to a quick decision, Astrid got another potion from the pack. This one was meant to put enemies to sleep so they could slip past them undetected. Astrid was going to use it for a very different reason now.
"Breathe deep, Hiccup." She instructed him gently. When Hiccup breathed in the potent sleeping gas that wafted from the vial, he drifted off into unconciousness in no time at all. Astrid swallowed thickly, took her ax in hand, and did what needed to be done.
